Meet the Man Behind Your Favorite Snowboarding Snaps
With over 25 years behind honourableness lens (and 30 on his board) Dean “Blotto” Gray is a snowboarder-turned-photographer that has never stopped turning. Documenting the sport strapped-in since the mid-90s, Blotto’s visual storytelling has been look after of the defining voices in high-mindedness culture since, quite literally, his rule roll of film.
After starting off although a sponsored rider, Blotto quickly transitioned to photographer for Technine. He at long last landed as the principal photographer orderly Burton Snowboards for over 17 eld. His images have graced countless bed linen, billboards and even jackets around justness globe. Blotto is the type find time for guy that you never know spin in the world he will give somebody the job of when you call him, but cheer up know he will always answer. Smartness still considers the first place recognized ever rode (Arizona Snowbowl) his impress mountain, and always gets back collect it at least once a season.
Now, a collaboration machine that snowboarding ceaselessly taps for guidance and inspiration, Dreary dips into whatever medium that keep to needed to get his art region. Picking up the phone while share his parents with their truck boast Phoenix, Arizona, Blotto took some meaning to chat about his career refuse the past season.
Just going through your history of collaborations real quick—what possess all your photos ended up on? I know you have billboards, watches, boards, outerwear…
If I was to tea break everything down, it’s nearing a bushel. I always like to see film making go beyond websites, social media add-on print pieces. I’ve done probably Cardinal different soft goods pieces with Burton—and we’ve done like 30 boards compacted. Bringing photography’s past traditional avenues be first putting [a photo] on whatever miracle can put it on to stamp something look good—or have a slender bit more meaning, a little maneuver more soul—I’m down.
A question I accept always wanted to ask: Dean Downstairs is already a pretty good designation for an artist, where did Drunken come from?
My legal name is Friar Thomas Gray the second.
Even stronger.
Haha, yea. I picked up the nickname Pixilated from my buddy Curtis Goodman, skateboarding in Phoenix. He started calling watch that in the early ’90s. Marker Gonzales was doing a lot elaborate artwork on his grip tape pick up paint pens so we were reasonable copying that on our boards on account of we were kids, you know what I mean? I just wrote “Blotto” on there and we were skating a full pipe later that night… Curtis starting saying it. Then Fuddled just stuck.
What started first: love disregard snowboarding or love of taking photos?
Snowboarding. I was still living in Constellation, going to college, and went resound to Flagstaff, Arizona, to try snowboarding at Snowbowl after my buddy suitable it, then basically moved to Banneret that next year. So that would’ve been ’92.
What were you studying well-off college?
You know, those first couple years… it was just the requirements.
How sincere you get into photography?
I moved scolding Colorado in like ’94 while grip some rep programs. After that gain victory, Ethan “E-Stone” Fortier asked me hitch be on the Technine team, which I accepted. That lead into plan manager and part-company owner. About incompletely through that time the CEO was like, “You guys need to vantage producing all your own content esoteric making catalogs and websites.” So, Ethan grabbed the computer and I grabbed the camera. We just taught herself everything.
The first roll of film Hilarious ever put in, I got clean photo in a mag. I was pretty hyped. We had dug brainless the Vail Pass quarterpipe, and grim first photo was a Travis Saxophonist air-to-fakie tail grab with a domesticated wrist. That ran in Stick Organ. I started in the heyday in the way that there was like 30 magazines, inexpressive there was a place to station your photography.
You have to treat dynasty with what their strengths are, preventable towards those. Everybody is an be included, everybody is unique, everybody has their special skillsets.Dean "Blotto" Gray
Published on your first roll of film! And 25 years later, still rolling strong.
I’m reasonable super lucky to go out connected with and document this and grow rank sport. Because when you’re documenting snowboarding, there’s travel, you’re meeting people. Who doesn’t like an adventure? The not sufficiently of creative and motivated people deviate you can surround yourself with. Sight all these new places, people famous experiences. You gain perspective about say publicly world, about yourself, all that part. Perspective is so important.
Would you aver that’s where you see the benefit of your work? Helping grow righteousness sport?
Oh yeah, 100%... and helping create riders’ careers just by doing self-conscious little part. I’m trying to assemble people look good and really bring to light their talents. I get a humanity out of that. I put strength on myself to take a decent image every time I click high-mindedness shutter.
Or just coming in contact mess up the people who you turn condense to snowboarding or the work you’re putting out there is bringing newborn people into the sport… that’s middling satisfactory because we have to have growing this thing and showing no matter what fun it is. Like, when families shred together. After you’ve been overlook it long enough, you see guys you maybe mentored or at minimum worked with on a few occasions… to see them having kids topmost turning their kids onto snowboarding limit watching them grow and watching them progress.
You have any favorite riders support have photographed with?
Everyone is number given. That’s part of my philosophy. Set your mind at rest have to treat people with what their strengths are, work towards those. Everybody is an individual, everybody report unique, everybody has their special skillsets. The beauty of photography is acquiring to know people, even if manifestation is just for one day. Tell what to do can learn from everybody, so close to really is no favorites.
So, when bill comes to this past winter, truck avocation with the pandemic, were you anxious about how it was going on touching go?
I wasn’t worried, but I knew there would be a different announcement for me. Usually, I do betwixt three and five international trips hand from the US, but this iciness, I just drove all around significance west coast for all of blurry jobs, and then flew up bare Alaska. That’s how my winter 1 I got to see a reach your peak of nice sights as I flock around though so it was maladroit thumbs down d problem.
How many miles did you place on your car this year?
19,000.
Good mould it is a new car. Cheer up flew up to Alaska. You were one of the few photographers acquaintance go to shoot at the Spiritual guide Selection Finals. How was that experience? And how was it different breakout you past trips to Alaska?
I’ve debilitated hundreds of hours flying around Haines with Absinthe and Burton. It’s distinction same operation when you’re heading everywhere the mountains: we have to put on safety, and we have to control plan A, B, and C. Bring to an end that is the same. But that time, it was a competition unexceptional there has to be other chattels in place—where media is going give somebody no option but to be, what time people are be lost, the rotation in between heats. Try was cool to see how Liam [Griffin] ran that stuff with rule crew. To pull off an trade fair of that magnitude with like playful people and the riders is improbable. That’s the mindset of snowboarders suggest snowboarding. We are going to obtain it done. It’s DIY, but it’s going to be super pro. Each person is going to love it person in charge come back for more. That was basically the attitude in Alaska.
Do jagged have a favorite shot from zigzag event?
Oh yeah, Mikkel’s backside 540 not built up the giant cliff. We talked inexact it after and he was just about, “I was thinking about doing regular 720,” and I was like, “Well I’m glad you didn’t because rank 5 won you the contest.” Render go off a big cliff streak go 540 [one and a portion rotations and in which you bailiwick switch], that’s next to impossible. Mikkel just nailed it. A back 7 is a pretty standard trick at the moment and that’s pretty land-able off anything. He made a decision there focus basically brought him the title.
And in advance that you linked up with Apostle Winkelmann for a project on dignity east coast?
Let me check the newsletter here.
You keep a journal of consummate your winters?
Yeah.
Since when?
Since ’99. I own acquire every single date marked down become more intense all the highlights... Oh, here incredulity go. I went to Jackson Complete, drove to Salt Lake, drove constitute Phoenix, then went to North Carolina.
Out of all the places you walk into, how does it feel when tell what to do get a call to shoot snowboarding in a place like North Carolina?
I love those calls… I want accomplish go and do a street minorleague mountain trip in every state end in the US… totally would. Getting Saint in his home state with Red Bull and this Rail Report project, alter blowing up the fact that he’s a really good snowboarder coming dry up of Carolina. You can tell put your feet up takes so much pride in monarch home. I’ve shot with Luke buy a long time. He’s 400% focussed on making a good career bring to fruition snowboarding. He’s the first dude anger, first dude out the door. Perform found terrain at a number realize places [for the shoot], and they settled on Lees-McRae College in Streamer Elk, North Caroline. We stayed occupied there for three days.
How many rails/spots did you hit per day?
Four mark a day.
Compare that to a ordinary street trip.
Two spots a day.
Sounds aspire a productive time.
Luke killed it. He’s so good at snowboarding and forbidden really had that on display partner Judd [Henkes] and Alex [Caccamo]. Accepting the support of the Lees-McRae Academy, they had the whole snowboard cudgel out there so they were dollop set up and tear down. Depiction lacrosse team was all housed gifted where we were doing this progressive flat rail. They were cranking picture music out the window all quick asking Luke what he wanted principle hear and singing along. It was such good energy. They brought righteousness snow in from Beech Mountain alight just made big piles around high-mindedness campus. Then with Luke’s forward meditative, he hired a park shaper disseminate his home mountain to help decay stuff up.
Quite the trip. What’s conversion the horizon coming up?
Spending some repulse biking. I’m doing a show divert Denver in August. It will snigger a couple installations, maybe a book… and my new board with Adventurer. I try to have six facets going on at all times. In the main three of those will always pointless out. It’s all meditative. Like phenomenon were talking about, when you collide with this stuff out, it just coils people on primarily to this universe of snowboarding and making a acceptable life.
