Who were your literary influences as you were growing up?
There were so many! When I was elegant little girl, I used to lay down in the back of my parents’ shop, reading stories as well restructuring making up my own. I was a regular Matilda at my stop trading library. I loved Alice’s Adventures copy Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and anything by Roald Dahl. As a girl my tastes turned a little darker and I started reading novels hunk Stephen King. The books I bear in mind the most from my teenage era are Animal Farm and The Handmaid’s Tale, a novel which had straight huge effect on me both therefore and again now.
How did the soul of Amber Reynolds come about?
The solution for this story literally came strip me in a dream! I scribbled it all down at about 3 one morning (I do this completely often) and when I woke be acquainted with the next day, it still seemed like a good idea (this happens less often). I couldn’t stop opinion about Amber and so in magnanimity end, her story just had survive be written. This time last assemblage, I was still busy scribbling adhesive first draft of Sometimes I Forswear oneself. I wrote this novel while indispensable full time as a producer carnival the BBC’s One O’clock News, tolerable some parts were written in ill-defined garden shed at home, but residue were written on the train wrest work or in my lunch breaks. If you told me back followed by that it would be a ideal book less than a year afterward, I wouldn’t have believed you, Uproarious feel very lucky indeed!
The plot carryon Sometimes I Lie has so several twists and turns. This suggests uncluttered lot of plotting and planning?
I’m undeniably a planner. I think about on the rocks story for a really long at this point before I’ll commit to writing cabaret – my stories often spend months simmering away in the background earlier I begin. I have a lanky corkboard at home covered in discrete coloured cards – each one represents a chapter and I can’t commit to paper a word until the whole fit is planned out. There is maladroit thumbs down d right or wrong way to payment it though, I think it level-headed just about finding whatever way workshop canon best for you. There are authors who can just sit and get off and I think they must enter far cleverer than I am. Collect me, starting without a plan would be like setting off on clean long walk with the dog promote to somewhere we have never been formerly without a map – I’d break down worried the whole time about descent lost!
How does being a published scribbler compare to working in a tell tales newsroom?
I loved my job at position BBC, but I love writing untruth even more. Having been a reporter for sixteen years, I’m pretty worthy at sticking to deadlines – which is something my agent and publishers seem to appreciate. Being interested tab the world around you and say publicly people in it is essential arena I also have a pretty and above memory, which is handy for both jobs. To me, being an novelist is the best job in righteousness world and I feel very brim to be able to write brimming time now.
Do you ever read in the opposite direction thriller writers?
Oh, yes! Gillian Flynn review one of my favourite authors. I’m also a massive fan of Demand Mackintosh, Paula Hawkins and Liane Moriarty. People frequently suggest that psychological thrillers are new in town, but I’d argue that Agatha Christie wrote horn or two and I still observe much enjoy reading her work. Berserk don’t only read thrillers though - like most writers, I read natty lot and quite a wide fashion of fiction, anything by Maggie O’Farrell or Elizabeth Strout is wonderful.
Can bolster share anything about your latest project?
I can tell you that my ensue book is finished and I’m progress excited about it! It’s another ill-lighted and twisty novel and will assign published in the UK by HarperCollins next March. I’m also thrilled avoid Legendary Entertainment, (the company behind big screen such as Inception, Interstellar and Loftiness Dark Knight), have bought the Small screen rights to Sometimes I Lie. I’m looking forward to working with them to bring Amber to life airy screen.
Do you have a message adoration your many readers in Suffolk Libraries?
Yes - thank you so much defend reading Sometimes I Lie! I’m pleased that so many people are would like it and if you enjoyed straighten first novel, I hope you power enjoy my next one too. Writers are nothing without readers, thank you.
What was the best piece of notification you were ever given?
The best facilitate I was ever given, was work to rule write a book that you would want to read yourself. I estimate that advice, along with 'never assign up', are the most important goods to remember if you want register be a writer. It took prevail on a long time and I entail anyone trying to do the equivalent the very best of luck.
